                                                      About Me

I am passionate about nursing. I like that nursing is different every day I work. Each new day introduces diverse challenges.  I meet different patients with various health concerns and cultural and spiritual backgrounds. Often the workday feels like an adrenaline rush. I personally embrace the challenges that come with the nursing profession. I view every new challenge in my nursing career as a learning experience. I am also a strong believer that every person that I meet as a nurse has an impact on my nursing career, leaving behind blueprints that later help me with future decision-making. Even the negative experiences I’ve had, have taught me what kind of nurse/educator/human

I don’t want to be.

As an educator, I am approachable and reasonable, but not foolish. I like when students come to my office to chat with me about potential ideas for the course, course improvements, asking for personal advice, conflict resolution support, and even surprise “venting” sessions. I try to be available to my students and actively listen. I am also told I can be funny at times when I lecture. However, I also uphold the standards of professional understanding. I hold my students accountable and help them reach high standards of nursing.

Please take a moment to look at my and this educator webpage to review my professional experience and research publications.

Sincerely,

Dr. Lewis

                                          Philosophy of Teaching

My philosophy of teaching is based on the belief that learning needs to be student-centered and that students need to be equal partners in the learning process. As a health science and nursing professor, I want my students to make connections. To me, understanding the definition of andragogy (the method and practice of teaching adult learners) is essential for the foundation of successful learning and teaching based on the adult as the receiving audience. The theory of andragogy, first published in 1973, was pioneered by Malcolm Knowles (Knowles, Holton III & Swanson, 2014).
